General Questions

How many surveys are produced each year?
We conduct ten surveys globally, spanning North America, Latin America, Developed Europe, Emerging EMEA and Asia-Pacific across equities and fixed income. For equities we have the Research survey (where buy side vote on top sell side research teams and individuals), the Executive Team survey (where buy side & sell side vote on the best teams at corporates), and the Corporate Insights Survey (where corporates vote on best sell side and buy side teams). All surveys are an independent evaluation of the firms and people involved and deliver detailed peer to peer comparative analysis each year. Each survey varies in complexity to each market, but within the Research surveys industry, macro and country sectors are typically included. Sales and Corporate Access teams are also evaluated as part of the advisory services. Trading & Execution is also voted on for the sell side.
What are the requirements for sell side analysts to be listed on the roster?
An analyst must publish investment research during the period covered by the poll. Analysts must be certified pursuant to Regulation AC (or equivalent) to be recognized as winners or team leaders in all industry sectors. (There is no such restriction in the economics and strategy categories.) Winners must achieve a minimum vote count. We will provide guidance on analyst coverage limits in each survey.
How are the research results determined?
Both the firm and individual results are determined by a numerical score which is detailed in the methodology document issued for each survey. Votes are weighted by the voting firm’s commission payout, or in some surveys, by the firm’s assets under management. Weighted points are used to create the rankings for each sector. First, second, third and Runner-Up (RU) positions are published. To achieve an RU place, the score must fall within 35% of the third-place score.
What is an executive team survey?
Our executive team rankings illustrate how corporate leaders and companies are viewed by investment professionals by both the buy and sell side. We currently publish seven equity perception studies, covering Asia (ex-Japan), Canada, Developed Europe, Emerging EMEA, Japan, Latin America, and the United States. Please scroll down to the Corporates section to learn more.

Surveys & Methodology

Who can participate in Extel surveys?
We have different criteria for each survey. Extel surveys are open to professionals from the buy-side, sell-side and corporates. It is best to check with the operations team on which survey you are eligible to vote in.
How are survey results collected and verified?
Results are collected via secure online polling and by centralised votes that are submitted directly to us. Verification is carried out by our operations team; thus, we require a professional email address, and we cross-check against our database to prevent duplicate or fraudulent votes.
When do the surveys open and close each year?
The annual survey schedule varies by region and market focus. Please visit our survey calendar to find the dates. Link
Why is there a gap between polling and results?
After each survey closes, there is a period of data validation that occurs before the results are published. The gap allows time for data verification, cleaning, and weighting. This ensures the published results are accurate, consistent, and credible across all markets.
Are all votes counted the same?
For the sell-side survey, votes are weighted based on the size of the voting firm to ensure results reflect true market impact rather than volume alone. Please read the methodology for your region to understand the full process. Votes are weighted by commissions and assets under management. In the executive team survey, all votes are equally weighted.
Can I see who voted for me?
No, you will not be able to see who voted for you – but you will be able to see the regions, bands and sizes of the voters.
How often is the data updated?
The surveys are all annual.
How is it independent? What are the 3 sides?
Extel brings together three perspectives, buy-side, sell-side, and corporates. Independence comes from transparent methodology and market-wide participation. We do not influence the votes or give our opinion; we gather the data independently.

Extel produces unique insights and actionable data based on annual performance and market penetration assessments across global and key capital markets participants, including Sell-side firms and Corporates. This data is independent, rigorous, trusted and global.
Why submit a Centralised Research Ballot?
Submission of a centralised or coordinated ballot enables you to access the full Research results from Extel on the best Sell Side firms and analysts; benchmark your broker evaluation to peers; combine and integrate Extel ranking data with other internal performance indicators; and conduct trend analysis across Sell Side firms, analysts, and sectors. It also minimises “noise” for your investment professionals during the polling periods. Taking a centralised or coordinated ballot from a Buy Side firm enables a complete and independent picture of a Buy Side firm’s evaluation of the Sell Side to be delivered, allowing Sell Side research providers to benchmark themselves against their competition and validate client feedback. Whether a direct feed from a Broker Vote or a centrally Coordinated Vote, these submissions are an important factor in achieving an independent, accurate, robust and validated overall evaluation of the Sell Side services.
How do I submit a Centralised Research Ballot?
Centralised ballot submissions may be provided by Broker Vote or a Coordinated Vote. All restrictions on the number of Sell Side firms and analysts which can be recognised are lifted. Broker Vote submissions vary in content, methodology and granularity; Extel map and enter these submissions, so a degree of interpretation is applied in consultation with the submitting firm. Coordinated Votes may be submitted by direct entry into the Extel voting portals or via an Excel template, usually by a designated Buy Side contact(s). Please contact Simon Maynard for further details.
What is the Executive Team Survey and how can I participate?
The Executive Team Survey provides both Buy and Sell-side firms the opportunity to recognise excellence in listed Corporate Management and Investor Relations Teams they invest in or interact with. This anonymous feedback provides invaluable insights to our Corporate clients on how to refine and hone their investor relations interaction with investors and the Sell Side.
What are the Asset Manager Rankings and who participates?
